Letter From The President

Dennis Davenport

As we see 1998 come to a close, I looked back and reflected on what we are doing. Is CAPET headed in the right direction? As president I decided to take a serious look at exactly what we are doing as an organization and what the future held.

We are currently in the planning stages for the 1999 Spring Conference and the Fall Conference. Both promise to be special events, with a great deal of good and important information to pass on. I think the organization is progressing well as we approach the millennium. I think we really need to evaluate the future of the association. Following are some of the ideas I have and others have developed that may be considered this year.

The CAPET logo. The logo was designed by Bruce Adams, of the Littleton Police Department, some years ago and is a very good design. We might consider adding some color to it. After talking with Bruce Adams, and members of the board, we will be looking at some different color schemes this year and will decide if it adds to the professional look of the logo. The actual design of the logo will probably not change.

Legislative Committee

One of my goals for the association is to help guide future legislation that deals with property and evidence. I read in the IAPE’s Evidence Log, that they were successful in writing and passing into law a bill that dealt with property. I believe that we should be looking into following suit and attempting to write and pass into law issues dealing with property. I have tasked the board with forming a committee and meeting with members to decide if this can be accomplished. I feel that the association should be very proactive in this matter.

Web Site

One of the major improvements in 1998 included the addition of a Web site. While this has been great, more work needs to be done on it. We have stayed away from a professional company designing it and maintaining it, and it has done well. But, the site really needs to be a little more timely and kept up. This is my fault and I will be doing a better job on it this year. This may include other members making changes to it as well.

Spring Conference

The board has realized that the spring conference is sometimes treated like the red headed step child compared to the fall conference. While it is a one day event, it stills needs to be well planed and organized, so that the information is as good and as informative as the fall conference.

The Evidence Locker

A lot of hard work has gone into the newsletter this past year, and it will continue. We are still actively looking for people to submit articles for the newsletter. Mr. Robert Duran has volunteered to write an occasional article for our newsletter, but we welcome submissions from other members as well.

1999 Fall Conference

One of the biggest changes for this year will include the combining of CAPET with the Rocky Mountain Division of IAI for the fall conference. This has been a vision of mine for some time. Will it work? Is it a good idea? We will find out. Preparations are being made now so as to accomplish this. I think that this will really serve to enhance both associations and prove to be an incredible conference.

As my final year as president I hope to serve the members and the board well, and look forward to bringing on new members to take an active role in making the association the best evidence association in the country. "
